– Group Theory and Applications –
The aim of this project is to perform research activities in the area of Group Theory and its applications. The members of the five Research Units involved (Firenze, Milano-Bicocca, Napoli, Padova and Salerno) have diverse and complementary research interests and skills. Exploiting the mixture of techniques and the composite mathematical insight at our disposal, we intend to approach some of the most important open problems in this fascinating area of Mathematics. In particular, we plan to attack some famous long-standing conjectures lying at the center of the modern Representation Theory of Finite Groups. Moreover, we intend to advance in the knowledge on Generating Properties in both finite and infinite groups. Finally we will be focusing on the study of Words and Verbal Subgroups, with the goal of answering some open questions posed by P. Hall more than sixty years ago.
